The mighty grey nurse sharks gather during the day in sheltered areas to rest. Half asleep/half awake, around 20 sharks were circling along the walls of an underwater canyon, just next to FishRock island, (South West Rocks, Australia).
Whilst sharks are used to divers visiting Fishrock, they will turn around or swim at a distance when spotting a diver on their way. To achieve this close-up shot, I dived with a rebreather (no noise nor bubbles produced), and positioned myself at the bottom of the canyon, totally still, so that the cruising sharks got comfortable with my presence and ignored me, passing above my head within touching distance. I then waited for 3 sharks to swim above me at the same time, allowing for this group photograph.
